Go for the city at street level: Grand Marché, wax-cloth shops, the fetish market, the cathedral, and the beach at dusk when fishing boats come in. It is a port capital best read in short walks, market stops and quick rides rather than through one grand monument.

Tip: Start early, hide the midday heat indoors, and leave the beach road for late afternoon. Give it a full day.

    Culture

    Koutammakou

This UNESCO cultural landscape in the north is where Batammariba families built takienta, earthen tower houses that hold people, grain and animals in one compact structure. You come to walk between villages and see architecture that still belongs to daily life, not a museum rope.

Tip: Go in the dry season and arrange a local guide from Kara or Nadoba. Give it a full day, or better, an overnight.

    Nature

    Kpalimé

Use it as a base for the southwest hills: cocoa and coffee country, forest walks, butterflies, craft workshops and waterfall trails. The point is to leave town on foot or by moto and spend the day in the cooler high ground.

Tip: Stay at least one night. Trails get slippery after rain, so ask locally which paths are passable.

  • Togoville, Togo

    History

    Togoville

Cross Lake Togo by pirogue to a town where a Catholic church, royal compounds and vodun shrines sit within a few streets of each other. The short boat ride is part of the reason to go; it makes the place feel properly separate from the coast road.

Tip: Best early or late, when the lake is calmer and the light is lower. Half a day is enough unless a ceremony is taking place.

  • Aného, Togo

    Beach

    Aného

Come for the old cemetery, the lagoon edge and the houses left by Afro-Brazilian returnee families. It is less about swimming than about walking a former coastal capital where Atlantic history still shows in the facades.

Tip: Give it a slow morning or an overnight from Lomé. The light is best early, before the sun flattens the town.

Story

The story, in three chapters

In Lomé, the beach road smells of salt, diesel and fish smoking over charcoal. A zemidjan rider taps the back seat and you are suddenly part of the traffic. Then a wooden pirogue slides across Lake Togo to Togoville, and the capital noise falls away behind reeds and shrine flags.

  1. Chapter 1

    Walls and lagoons

At Notsé, the Ewe origin story turns on King Agokoli and an escape through wet clay. Southward, lake and coastal settlements traded salt, fish and goods along the Gulf of Guinea. Northward, Batammariba families raised takienta, earth houses with grain above and animals below. Long before a straight border appeared on maps, this was already many small worlds.

  2. Chapter 2

    The treaty on the lake

In 1884 Gustav Nachtigal arrived at Togoville and signed a treaty with King Mlapa III. Berlin called Togoland a model colony and pushed rail lines inland from the coast. Then the First World War reached West Africa. British and French troops entered in 1914, and the territory was split between them.

  3. Chapter 3

A long rule, a busy coast

Sylvanus Olympio led independence in 1960 and was killed in a coup three years later. In 1967 Gnassingbé Eyadéma took power; after his death in 2005, Faure Gnassingbé became president. On a weekday morning in Lomé now, zemidjans weave between port trucks, bread sellers and school uniforms. In 2024 lawmakers approved a new constitution that moved the system toward parliament, and the argument over power did not end there.

Say hello

Say it like a local

  • Ŋdi na mi

    Good morning

    Say: eng-dee nah mee

  • Èfoa?

    How are you?

    Say: eh-FOH-ah

  • Akpe kakaka

    Thanks very much

    Say: ah-KPEH kah-kah-kah

  • Woezɔ

    Welcome; come in

    Say: woh-eh-ZAW

  • Yoo

    OK; I hear you

    Say: YOH-oh

Surprises

Things you did not know

  1. Lomé's wax-cloth traders were known as the Nana Benz because the richest of them arrived in Mercedes-Benz cars. Their trading networks reached far beyond Togo and helped shape fashion across the region.

  2. Independent Togo came out of a United Nations Trust Territory, not straight out of an ordinary colony. French Togoland remained under UN trusteeship until 1960.

  3. On the eve of the 2006 World Cup, coach Otto Pfister briefly walked out over player bonus disputes. Togo still went on to play its first and only finals tournament days later.

At a glance

Togo: know before you go

Best time to go
November to February is easiest for a first trip: drier roads, cooler mornings and clearer hill views. The south has two rainy seasons, which can slow travel.
Budget
LowMeals, shared taxis and simple rooms are usually inexpensive; costs rise when you need a private car, a driver or a guide for longer trips.
Etiquette
Greet people before asking for directions, prices or photos. Use your right hand for money, and do not photograph shrines, police, soldiers or border posts without permission.
Safety
The real risk is the road: fast buses, overloaded motos and poor night driving. Avoid long intercity journeys after dark, wear a helmet on zemidjans if one is offered, and keep valuables out of sight on beaches and in crowded markets.
