Start here for the city's best contradiction: leafy avenues, Soviet facades, the wooden Ascension Cathedral, the Green Bazaar, and the Tian Shan suddenly rising behind them. It works both as a city break and as the easiest base for mountain air, baths, museums, and good eating.

Tip: Give it two days; clear mornings are best for mountain views, and traffic gets slow later on.

Go late in the day and walk Nurzhol Boulevard from Bayterek Tower toward Khan Shatyr, then down to the Ishim River embankment, when office workers, cyclists, and families make this planned capital feel human. What you are really seeing is how a state tried to build itself in steel, glass, and wind on open steppe.

Tip: A long afternoon and evening cover the core on foot; dress for wind in any season, and for serious cold in winter.

    Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi

In Turkistan, this Timurid monument is not just something to photograph. You come for the brick vaults and tilework, but also to watch it remain a place of pilgrimage, with people moving through it quietly rather than treating it as a dead relic.

Tip: Give it half a day; near sunset is best, when the light softens and day-trippers thin out.

    Aktau

This is Kazakhstan's Caspian edge: a seafront city where people come out at dusk, eat fish, swim in summer, and look across an inland sea that feels like a paradox. It is also the easiest doorway into Mangystau, with its chalk cliffs, desert emptiness, and odd Soviet urbanism, including a lighthouse perched on an apartment block.

Tip: Stay a night for the waterfront, longer if you have a driver for Mangystau day trips; spring and autumn are easier than high summer for the desert.

    Kolsai Lakes National Park

Come here to leave the cities behind and walk beside dark alpine water, spruce forest, and mountain pasture. Even the first lake gives you the feeling of a proper escape, and the area shows a softer, greener side of the country than the steppe usually gets credit for.

Tip: It is worth an overnight rather than a rushed day trip; late spring to early autumn is the practical window.

Story

The story, in three chapters

In Almaty, snow peaks appear at the end of ordinary streets as if the city forgot to leave itself enough room. At Green Bazaar the air smells of apples, dill, hot samsa, and smoked horse sausage, and even quick errands can turn into tea. Then you take a long road or a night train out into the steppe and understand the real trick here: how fast a table-sized world opens into enormous distance.

  1. Chapter 1

    The camp turns east

In Semirechye, Kerei and Janibek break away from Abu'l-Khayr Khan. Felt tents come down. Herds move. Followers gather around a different claim to power. Out of that split, in the fifteenth century, the Kazakh Khanate begins.

  2. Chapter 2

    The steppe is seized

In the 1930s, Soviet rule tries to pin down a mobile world. Collectivization takes herds, and famine follows. Then the land is used again: camps, the Semipalatinsk test site, the northern grain drive. In 1989 the poet Olzhas Suleimenov goes on television and calls people into the streets against nuclear testing. A place long treated as empty proves it is full of witnesses.

  3. Chapter 3

    January in Almaty

In January 2022, protesters fill Republic Square after a jump in fuel prices. By night the mayor's office burns and the internet goes dark. The shock cracks the long Nazarbayev era more visibly than anything before it. Now you hear more Kazakh in cafés and on trains, and more open talk about famine, prisons, and tests. The state still keeps a tight hand, but the conversation is wider.

Surprises

Things you did not know

  1. Lake Balkhash is fresh in the west and salty in the east. A narrow strait and uneven river inflow keep the two halves unexpectedly different.

  2. Much of Aktau is still navigated by microdistrict numbers rather than street names. Locals often give directions by district, block, and building first.

  3. Flamingos breed on the steppe here. Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve, far from any tropical coast, is one of the places to see them.

Kazakhstan: know before you go

Best time to go
May to June and September are the easiest months for a first trip: the south and west are less punishing, and the mountains are open without deep winter cold.
Budget
MidMeals, trains, and many domestic services are reasonable, but internal flights, remote drivers, and business-city hotels can raise costs quickly.
Etiquette
If tea is offered, take at least a cup unless you have a reason not to; lingering at the table is part of politeness. In homes, shoes usually come off at the door. At shrines, dress modestly and ask before photographing people at prayer.
Safety
The real risk is scale. Weather changes fast, distances are long, and phone signal disappears outside cities. Use app taxis in town, carry water on road trips, and do not treat desert or steppe drives as casual without fuel, offline maps, and a driver who knows the route. If protests flare, avoid central squares and expect sudden internet disruption.
